This unit covers the aspect of lesson materials in their various forms. Initially we are told about the differences of authentic and created materials. Authentic material, anything a native speaker could hear or read, is not designed for an EFL student and hence has to be selected carefully. On a positive note, authentic material is likely more interesting and topical, and students gain a lot of confidence when they understand it. The opposite is created material, usually designed or created by the teacher to replace or supplement the course book (for example gap fill activities, word search puzzles, flashcards, role-play cards), and are geared towards different levels. After showing us different examples of created material, we find in-depth information about course books, their advantages and disadvantages, how to best analyze them in order to find the most fitting one for your class, and how to best use them in the class environment. I liked this unit as it gave a lot of practical tips and hints on how to create your own teaching material, especially the facility on making your own crosswords will come in useful this week.
