This unit focuses on productive skills ? speaking and writing. It is absolutely important for the teacher to create a need or desire in the students, to participate in these skills. Accuracy activities are best incorporated during the study phase and fluency activities should be for the activate phase. When considering speaking skills, the three types of speaking activities and examples thereof are discussed, reasons why many students seem reluctant to speak are stated, and techniques to encourage interaction are given. An example of a typical creative writing activity including guidelines on what to do before, during and after the activity, is provided. Attention is given to writing skills too. Here, we discover sub-skills that teachers should be aware of, especially when dealing with ESL students. These are handwriting, spelling, pronunciation, layout, and creative writing.
