Course books are ever present in English classes, and for good reasons: they provide security for both teachers and students, they offer a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary, and skills work, and the syllabus in these books will normally have been tried and tested. On top of that, course books are usually professionally laid out and therefore nice to look at. However, an exclusive use of course books can make the class predictable and boring. To offset this, teachers would do well to add variety with use of teaching materials. These materials can be authentic materials as well as those that the teacher creates himself/herself.
