There are five main conditionals: zero, first, second, and third conditional, and then the mixed conditional as well. The conditionals can be very difficult for students, particularly for students of non European native languages. They are not as easy to understand as reported speech, in my opinion. This is because the concept of reporting someone else's past words is easier to understand. Reported speech, however, has many exceptions that are dependent on context. A sentence in the present simple can become either past simple or present simple in reported speech, depending on whether the situation, or fact, remains true or not.
