Reading and listening are key skills for students to learn, but both can present a number of problems. It is important to choose the right material for the students, making sure that the language is not too challenging and that the issue is of interest to the students. When teaching receptive skills it may be useful to pre-teach more difficult language and structures, but there should be a focus on vocabulary that is essential to understanding the material. Confidence is also an important issue to consider and non-authentic texts are a good way to build the students confidence, while authentic texts must be selected carefully.
