The use of tenses can be a complicated matter for ESL students if their own native language does not have specific tenses as well. It will be helpful to divide the use of tenses into past, present and perfect, and then sub-divide it into the different forms (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous) to help students to understand them better. However, as indicated in earlier chapters, students might still have to memorise the verb forms, particularly for irregular verbs. Perhaps using a timeline in lessons may also help in getting students to understand when each tense and form should be used when communicating in English.
