Unit 19 covered the types of special groups of English learners and tools and techniques used to effectively teach to those groups. The special group, \"Beginners,\" can encompass a variety of type of learner; for example, an Absolute Beginner, a student who has never learned English at all, to a \"False Beginner,\" someone who possibly has learned a bit of English in the past and who could even put together a simple sentence, but who might categorize themselves as a beginner. The material provided valuable tips for a teacher to use for this group such as 1) Have clear and realistic goals; don't try to teach too much too fast; and 2) Don't use the students' native language even if you know it. This would be tempting, I'm sure. I took a Spanish immersion class in Nicaragua and recall the teacher helping us in English. I was grateful for this, but used it as a crutch if I got stuck. I resorted to English instead of trying to work it out in Spanish. The section on 1:1 lessons was particularly important to me since this is an area I have an interest in when I job search. The various suggestions offered as well as the potential pitfalls was helpful. Teaching children presents its own challenges and rewards. The \"Dos and Don'ts\" offered valuable advice. Teaching Business English students most closely resembles my previous experience as a corporate delivery trainer and instructional designer. The process of evaluating, assessing, designing and implementing a course or lesson was similar.
