In this lesson I learned about teaching and learning when it comes to adult students. I learned some of the roles of a teacher. These include being an instructor, a facilitator, a mentor, a psychologist, a counselor, and a policeman. These responsibilities can change based off of the size of the class and which student a teacher is working with. There are many advantages to working with adult students. For example, they typically have a higher maturity level than children as well as a longer attention span. This means that there should be less classroom distractions as well as less of a need to explain why something is being done. Some potential problems include the fact that many adults are taking English classes after long days of work and tend to be very tired by the time they get to their English classes. Some adults have also been out of an education environment for many years and can have some issues readjusting to being students again. One-on-one classes can be beneficial to English learners because they have one hundred percent of their teacher?s attention and can get feedback on every aspect of the lesson. Incorporating things like listening and reading are important for any language learning environment. These kinds of things should be related to phone calls and emails or anything that has to do with the professions of the students. This lesson review teaching theories that were introduced in the 120 hour lessons as well as the different structures of and ESA lesson plan.
