Teach English in Songbai Zhen - Yangjiang Shi
This unit teaches about two of the four skills that need to be included in teaching a language. They are reading and listening, which are the receptive skills. There are two reasons that make us read and listen; we read and listen for pleasure and for achieving something, but when learning a language, students need to straighten some areas that everybody use when reading and listening. We, as teachers, need to teach them how to predict what is going to happen in the text, how to scan for specific information, how to skim for the general idea, how to infer information based on the context, and how to read and listen for details such as the steps on making something. However, there are some problems that students face when they read and listen to English, and we can avoid those problems by teaching essential words and grammar before reading or listening to a passage, selecting the texts carefully, and choosing interesting topics for the students; if not all students are interested on a topic, we need to help them get involved in it before starting; to achieve this, we could use some engaging activities. In conclusion, it is very important for teachers to pre-teach difficult vocabulary and structure, use different material in every lesson, engage students on the topic, use real comprehension questions and tasks to help them understand the texts, and help students practice different skills from the texts by using activate activities if they want to teach receptive skills lessons successfully.
