This unit covers a lot of common sense but important aspects of teaching that all lend themselves to helping you maintain control of your class. It was especially common sense for me, as I've taught English for a couple of years now. However, it was nice to have these things pointed out to me, as I sometimes forget useful classroom management techniques after a long stressful day or week. For example the unit covers things like eye contact, gesture and voice. You can forget or just be too tired to incorporate any one of those things and as result your classroom management can fall apart. The unit also addresses how you can group students when doing activities, and the pros and cons of each style. It also addresses the different ways you can arrange the desks in your classroom, and how and when it might be suitable to use each set up. The unit then discusses board work and suggestions on how to maintain control of the classroom during that time. In addition, the unit talks about teacher verses student talking time and the benefits of both, as well as the negative consequences that can occur when there is too much of one or the other. In addition, it goes over how to best give instructions to the students, including catering how you speak to below their level, using simple language, using visual cues, and being consistent. Lastly, the unit talks about how to maintain discipline by discussing some potential reasons for the problem behavior, how to prevent it, and how to respond to it.
