This unit discussed the relationship between teachers and learners. Some of the factors that I learned about were how student age, learner type, and culture directly affect the learning experience. For example, adults tend to be more motivated learners as they have chosen to pursue ESL education, but they may be more set in their ways, errors will be harder to correct, and they will suffer from success anxiety more often than younger learners. Younger learners will be more open minded, but will have shorter attention spans. I learned about several different roles that teachers can fill, and how the teacher's role needs to constantly change and shift in the classroom depending on the factors mentioned above. None of these these roles should be overused in a successful classroom. In my opinion, resource/facilitator and observer/monitor are two of the most important roles. I believe that a teacher will fill these roles more often as the learner advances, and is able to communicate their opinion more effectively. This role will be harder in some Asian countries, where many students have a fixed idea that the teacher should be speaking the majority of the time, which makes this role even more valuable there. It is very important to take a step back and allow students to communicate their own ideas, and to gain oral confidence with the language. In summary, every student/teacher relationship is affected by a huge variety of factors, which the teacher needs to carefully consider each and every day.
