Teach English in SAnjia Zhen - Yangjiang Shi
This unit focuses on teaching productive skills--speaking and writing. Both of these skills are taught similarly because they both involve communication between the speaker and receiver and therefore require similar motivations. For more effective responses, students should be given a reason to speak or write that will encourage more output, such as personal interest. If the students are properly engaged, then they will feel better about attempting to speak out or write more. As a teacher, we must keep a proper balance between accuracy and fluency exercises, which are both important for language mastery. Accuracy activities will help students exhibit the proper grammar, vocabulary, and structures, while fluency will help them become more effective in communicating more thoughts and ideas as well as give them more confidence in speaking. When teaching writing skills, there are more components for students to practice, such as the more formal nature of grammar and vocabulary as well as spelling, handwriting, layout, and punctuation. The best method of practicing these new considerations is to constantly expose students to plenty of samples so they can learn by example. One of the best methods for teaching productive skills is incorporating creative activities in both speaking and writing exercises. Not only are students more in charge of their output, but they can also produce results that they can be proud of, thereby gaining more self-esteem and comfort in utilizing productive skills.
