Teach English in Nalong Zhen - Yangjiang Shi
It is amazing how far the field of language-learning has come, although it feels as though we have progressed very little. Knowing the classical method came from the 17th century, I witness other teachers use it in classes daily. My teacher insists on using audio-linguist and classical techniques to teach low level students who have no understanding of what they're repeating. As stated in the video, this technique is only really useful when grammar and vocabulary is similar in L1 and L2. I am working at a Japanese high school and the grammar couldn't be more different from English! The subject, verb, and object are on quite opposite sides. It is neither engaging or effective. I would really love to utilize the knowledge I've learned here but it's quite impossible in my current school. The ESA method is particularly difficult in a class of 42 students with a very low level and behavioral issues. I look forward to the manifest on classroom management. The Engage stage requires that everyone get a chance to speak and think in English. Games like \"fizz buzz\" could be very effective to this end, but anything less straightforward than that is impossible for us. Finally, with the activate stage, it's very difficult to manage the classroom during these activities. Students are often wrestling on the floor, running around, and talking about irrelevant topics. I think this is why my teacher has resorted to the lowest denominator in terms of teaching techniques. I will continue to study and do my best!
