Modal auxiliary verbs are verbs accompanied by words that modify it called ?modals.? These are used to express multiple ideas ranging from obligation to ability and advice. They are also used to express degrees of formality. Some ideas for teaching this to students involve roleplay, such as playing a doctor, or practice creating rules. The passive voice is one of the two voices in writing where the subject performing the action is not important, not known, or is not wanting to be said. This follows the form of using the auxiliary verb ?be? in addition to the past participle. The passive voice puts emphasis on the objects rather than the doer of the action. Clauses are groups of words containing a subject and a verb and can be divided into three categories. The first is the independent clause where it is a complete sentence and contains a main subject and verb. Then there is the dependent clause which needs to be connected to an independent clause to be a complete sentence. A subset of the dependent clause is the relative clause which is a clause that modifies the noun. This can further be broken down into defining and non-defining clauses. Finally, phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs that consist of a verb and one or two particles. There are three types: Intransitive, Transitive separable, and transitive inseparable. Phrasal verbs are used to take on a different meaning than to that of the original verb. These phrasal verbs can be complicated and it is best to take it slow.
