Teach English in Hongfeng Zhen - Yangjiang Shi
This unit was about tests and evaluations. I think tests are important. It is definitely good to do a placement test for students. When I studied abroad in France, we took both a written and oral placement test before we were assigned to a class. This was good because there were so many different levels of French skills in our group. We had people that were practically fluent and others who barely knew how to say hello. It wouldn't have been beneficial for anyone of us if we had been placed in the same class. Progress tests are important as well. I think these show the teacher where the students stand on understanding of what has been taught so far. This allows the teacher to make the decision if they need to work on particular things a bit more before moving on or not. I think my struggles in making test and such will be having to include aspects of an exam that I hated when I was in my language classes. I always hated oral exams because my speaking skills were never all that good. I always tested better on paper. However, now that I look back on it, it was good to have oral exams. Because I tested well on paper, part of my brain thought that I was much better at the language than what I actually was when put in a conversational situation. There will always be students that test better on paper. Oral exams are important for them not to discourage them, but to show both the teacher and the student what areas they need to work on before they are confident enough to tackle a real life situation.
