This unit is about course development, including creating a syllabus and an overview of various testing methods in the classroom. Before beginning to teach a class, it is often helpful to conduct level testing to see students' current level of English and a needs analysis to get an idea of students' goals and past learning experiences. However, when developing a course, the teacher may be limited by rules set by his or her employer, time constraints, and the amount of resources available, among other limitations. Depending on where the teacher will be working, the teacher may have to create their own syllabus, in which case they will have to keep in mind the structure of the syllabus (whether to focus on grammar, situational needs, communicative purposes, etc.), testing needs, and how many hours are available throughout the course. When making assessments of students, there are various ways of testing, such as diagnostic tests that assess students' knowledge before beginning a course and progress tests that assess students' progress in specific areas of the classroom. There are also examinations of English such as the CYLE test, which the teacher may need to help prepare students for as well. Finally, teachers should conduct a course evaluation at the end of the course to possibly make adjustments and improve future courses. Although some of the information in this unit was the same as in the general TEFL course, it was very helpful to see it in this unit in the context of teaching young learners.
