In conclusion, this unit focuses on receptive skills teaching: reading and listening. Reading is as important as listening in our language teaching. The motives of our reading and listening are generally divided into two categories: first, we want to achieve some specific reason; second, we read and listen for entertainment. Our understanding of the context often depends on our skills, such as prediction from headlines, scanning for specific information and skimming for general idea, and so on. Different skills can help us achieve different understanding. However, we still have some problems with reading and listening teaching. It is often hard for language learners to understand long sentences and it is not easy for them to get the main idea when they are listening to a fast speaker. For those problems, we can pre-teach difficult vocabularies and carefully select texts, like using non-authentic texts for beginners. We should help students build confidence in their minds. Also, we should get to know students and their interests, and then choose interesting topics that motivate students in learning. Sometimes we can get students engaged and motivated in tasks even though they were originally not interested in the topic. Comprehension tasks are useful to check students' understanding rather than ask questions like \"Do you understand\". An ESA lesson plan is essential for us to prepare for a receptive skills lesson and we also can design some common games in the activate phase to interest students.
