Pronunciation and phonetics, while often overlooked or ignored in the process of learning, provide a reliable method necessary to achieving the right types of intonation and stressing of words in spoken dialogue. In particular, I learned the formal teaching methods and theory behind English language intonation in statements versus those that demand responses, as well as generalized tricks to knowing when to stress a syllable within a specific word. While the phonetic alphabet is still relatively foreign to me, the process by which the specific symbols match other languages universally makes the system powerful for ensuring standardization across different languages.
