In my experience, passive voice is something, while difficult for non-native speakers, is an essential grammar point in the English language. Modals, to me, are less critical but nonetheless important as well. Teaching modals can be a challenge, though, since the various levels come naturally to native speakers, but a learning task for non-natives. Phrasal verbs is probably going to be one of the more difficult aspects of English grammar that I will teach in the future. Many new learners may view the words independently and therefore not be able to ascertain the correct meaning. The trick may be to find a list of commonly used verbs and implement them in an activity.
