This unit deals primarily with the difference between authentic and created materials. The balance between the two is a vital component of teaching. Authentic materials are usually more topical and can be chosen to cater for students interests. Created materials are useful in that they can be graded to students levels. Another aspect of this chapter was the use of course books in the classroom. In my opinion course books are essential in the classroom because they provide a firm base from which to study. However, they must not be the sole method of teaching. Supplementary material and substitute material must provide back up to keep the lessons enjoyable and relevant.
