Grammar can be tricky, especially when verb forms have detailed descriptors. With the utmost respect, I feel that grammar is often a barrier to students' language acquisition. They have enough of a time tuning their ear to new sounds and becoming comfortable with new structures - why dump a second foreign language, grammar-speak, onto them? Granted, I feel this most strongly with beginners. More advanced students have much more of a foundation of language to work from and if they ask for grammatical explanations, I say give them what they feel is helpful. Perhaps grammar can be likened to salt: too much and it ruins the meal but the food is still enjoyable without it.
