Learning receptive skills is equally important to students development as learning productive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening. We do both either for entertainment or for a specific purpose. Listening and reading are much more complex processes than they appear to be because they involve an extensive use of our mind, which must recognise the words, understand them, and finally grasp the meaning which can be hidden under a metaphor. When we read and listen we use various specific skills such us prediction, scanning for a specific information, skimming to get a general idea, searching for more detailed information, deducting a meaning from the context.
