This unit has dealt with the common issues that come up during a course, and effective ways of dealing with them. When dealing with new groups, it is recommended that rapport be established between the teacher and students and between the students themselves, so that everyone feels involved. With groups of varying levels of language proficiency/ability, one can use methods that give balance to the learning setting while allowing students to progress at their appropriate levels, such as pairwork. When dealing with large classes, the teacher will need to be conscious of his/her own clarity of communication, and can also use choral drilling as a means to involve all the students. Another issue is use of native language: it is important to keep the students communicating in English rather than their native language; where students keep reverting to their native language, the teacher may need to use methods that encourage use of English e.g. adapt the level of activities to the appropriate language level so that the students have the necessary tools to communicate in English; also can use role plays to build confidence in communicating.
