Testing involves a number of different methods suited to measure the level and progress of students. Teachers have a few different options to choose from when deciding to give an examination. Certain exams are more appropriate than others when assessing the language fluency of students. Placement and diagnostic tests are typically performed before or at the beginning of a course as they reveal which group a student belongs to and informs the teacher what the student does or does not know. Progress tests are very commonly found throughout the the school year, as they assess the progress of students during the terms. Progress tests can take the form of group activities or individual quizzes given weekly, monthly, or whenever the educator deems fit. An achievement exam would then be taken at the end of the course. Practice exams are given to prepare learners who will be taking an external examination. The practice tests allow students to see examples of past exams and understand their format. External examinations are taken by those who want to measure their proficiency in English and are offered by organisations such as Cambridge or Trinity.
