Conditionals in English grammar can be very confusing to both native and non-native speakers. It might seem that native speakers should not face any problems while solving questions including conditional structures since they have an intuitive sense that allows them to tell right forms from the wrong ones. However, even native speakers of English quite often make common mistakes in such questions. This mostly depends on the level of education the native speakers possess. To my personal mind, once you've learned by heart all the forms and completed the necessary amount of exercises, all the conditional forms take the constant place in your brain forever just like the irregular verbs do. I do not understand why students are that much afraid of this grammar part because there are no exemptions and you can simply learn the rule once. As for the direct and indirect speech, I really find it very easy and logical, the simple sequence of tenses rule is being used. The thing I liked in this unit about the explanation of the material is that you just have to go through slowly and accurately without any gaps. These topics do need the precise studying.
