This unit considers pros and cons of authentic versus created materials, in addition to coursebooks. Broadly, authentic materials include anything a native speaker might consume (e.g. newspaper, radio broadcast, film) but may not be well-suited to beginners or designed for students learning English. Though the range of topics for authentic materials is broader and interest level to students higher, they are constricted in how much teachers can adapt these materials for use by students of all levels or a classroom with mixed level students. Created materials, on the other hand, are designed by the teacher to replace or supplement pieces of a coursebook. These include word searches, gap fill exercises, flash cards, and other teacher-created materials. These are good for students to practice the language they might learn in a coursebook, and offer flexibility for the instructor to target activities and topical content towards student interests and abilities. The general discussion on advantages and disadvantages of coursebooks offer thoughtful wisdom about how to choose a coursebook, when to use a coursebook, and points of caution in their use.
