The unit covers the basics of English Grammar. Nouns can be simplified at naming words. The unit expands this definition to include all the different types of nouns. The different types of nouns are common (tangible nouns), proper (words beginning with a capital letter, names, cities, countries), compound (2 nouns put together to make a new word), abstract and collective (groups) nouns. Nouns can be countable or uncountable. Nouns are fundamental in speech and written work as they are the subject and idea of reference. The difference between nouns and pronouns. Pronouns are words used in place of nouns or noun phrases, for example, I, he, they, you, she, it. Adjectives help to describe the person, animal, thing or place you are talking about. Generally, the adjective order in English is: Size, Age, Color, material, noun for example; the large new yellow rubber duck. The difference between an adjective and an adverb is that an adverb is a word that describes verbs, adjectives or another adverb whereas an adjective describes a noun or pronoun. An example of an adverb in a sentence; The girl rode home quickly. The word quickly is an adverb and it describes how the girl rode. A preposition refers to a word that is used with a noun or pronoun to show place, position, time or method. A preposition is usually placed in front of a noun. For example; The lake by the castle. The house behind the playground. A conjunction is a word that joins together sentences, clauses, phrases, or words. The main function of conjunctions is to connect two things. In the English language, there are many examples for conjunctions. Some are: and, but, either/or, neither/nor, not only, because, although, until, while, unless, since, or. For example; Unless you finish your homework, I cannot let you swim. Gerunds is a word ending in ?ing? that is made from a verb and is used as a noun. For example: He is fond of swimming. Comparative adjectives are words used to compare 2 nouns. It is important to remember the rules with using comparative adjectives. For adjectives that are just one syllable, add -er to the end. For example: tall ? taller, high ? higher, small ? smaller. For two-syllable adjectives ending in -y, change the -y to -i and add -er. Example: easy ? easier, silly ? sillier, funny ? funnier. For two-syllable adjectives not ending in -y and for all three-or-more-syllable adjectives, use the form ?more + adjective.? For example: difficult ? more difficult, intelligent ? more intelligent, beautiful ? more beautiful. There are Irregular comparative adjectives that do not follow the rules of regular comparative adjectives. Example: good ? better, little ? less, bad ? worse. Superlative adjectives are words used to compare 3 or more nouns. It takes the comparison of words to the highest degree. For adjectives that are just one syllable, add -est to the end. For example, small ? smallest, tall ? tallest, high ? highest. For two-syllable adjectives ending in -y, change the -y to -i and add -er. Example: easy ? easiest, silly ? silliest, funny ? funniest. For two-syllable adjectives not ending in -y and for all three-or-more-syllable adjectives, use the form ?most + adjective.? For example: difficult ? most difficult, intelligent ? most intelligent, beautiful ? most beautiful. Articles are used to indicate whether a noun in a sentence is specific or general. There are 2 types of articles, definite and indefinite articles. Definite article is ?the?. It refers to a specific noun or group of nouns. Example. The dress is still in the shop. The dress is referring to a specific dress, and the shop is referring to a specific shop not just any shop or any dress. Indefinite articles are a/an. A/an refer to a noun but the noun is not specific. For example: A dress in a shop. This refers to any dress and shop, it is not specific.
