Teach English in Hengliang XiAng - Wuwei Shi
There are several types of beginner categories: 1. Absolute beginners- This is the type of language student who have no English at all. 2. False beginners - This is the type of students who might have undergone English course but have not properly retained much of the language. Perhaps, they can understand quickly and able to produce some simple language structures. 3. Adult beginners- Adult beginners will probably be highly motivated to learn English language since they have taken a decision to learn it. 4. Young beginners - Young beginners tend to pick up new language quickly but will always lack motivation to learn English language because young beginners might not have seen the importance of learning the language and its benefits. 5. Beginner without basic Roman alphabet- This type of English language student knows nothing about the language. When teaching beginners the teachers should use some of the following approaches: Awareness of student?s needs, using clear language and giving simple instructions, motivate the students to speak English in the classroom and avoid them speaking mother tongue, never attempt to do too much too quickly, be visual as much as possible, taking good care of board work, use pair and group work, ask students lots of questions, using class worksheets and home worksheets, creating a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. In teaching individual students, students feel that course could be specifically focused on their own wants and needs than being part of a group, there is no mix of levels, needs can be clearly defined, and a close relationship between the students can be developed. In teaching groups, there is a mix of different levels of students. Students with less understanding capability could be paired or grouped together with better ones. In teaching individual students, some activities such as student-student pair work or group work, classroom game plays becomes impossible. One to one lessons are usually less formal and the teacher will often be the partner of the student. Teaching young learners is completely different from teaching adult learners in a number of ways; ? Teaching young learners can pose a lot of challenges especially when it comes to attention and discipline. It?s quite difficult to maintain kids? attention which is never a problem when teaching adult learners. Moreover, young learners especially kids require constant attention. ? Teaching young learners have to be more of fun in order to keep them focused and participate unlike in the case of adult learners who have taken a decision to learn English language. ? Young learners perhaps, tend to learn new language more quickly just like the way they learned their native language. ? Preparing lessons for adult appears relatively easier than that of young learners since lessons can be focused on the vocabulary level of the students. ? In the case of monolingual class, adult learners tend to communicate together with other class members in their native language. ? Teaching young learners requires a lot of virtual teaching aids as well as game play activities in order to keep the class fun and interesting. They tend to lose interest if lessons appear boring. Nowadays, there is a huge interest for studying Business English or English for specific purposes, which teachers somehow find it challenging because they feel insecure in the topic, but it is important to know that they are professionals in teaching and not in business. In these types of classes there would be many differences in the age of the students, lots of absences due to various job obligations or many unwritten home works and lack of motivation due to tiredness. Before planning the program the teacher should do the following needs analysis: ? it is necessary to obtain information from various individuals about the company and their line of business in order to know the key vocabulary that is required to communicate effectively. Convenient time of individual business student would also be noted. ? Furthermore, with the information obtained, specific lesson plans should be designed to meet the needs of the students bearing in mind the company?s line of business and specific issues that prompted the design of the course. Multilingual classes are the types of classes that the students come from different countries in an English speaking country, so they have an advantage at the beginning that the only language for communication between them is English. And a monolingual class is usually taking place at the student?s home and cannot offer the same advantages as the multilingual class.
