This is an immensely helpful course. Although I always try to read or watch some educational materials for teachers, it was really advantageous to revise and re-systematize the previous experience as well as to obtain new knowledge. I am definitely more self-confident now, and probably will give a try to looking for some teaching job abroad. I?m forty-six, there is not much time left, but the feeling that there must be something more to life is haunting me. I?d like to share with as many people as possible my knowledge, my tremendously infinite love to the English language, my joy of teaching and learning. Anyway, I highly appreciate the opportunity to get and try some new approaches, sources and techniques. First Lesson Plan 1. Greeting and introducing (7-10 mins) Hello! (wave my hand) My name is Natalya. I?m an English teacher. I come from a country which will definitely come to your mind if you see this (a picture of matryoshka doll/Russian nesting doll). Who knows what it is? ? Good guess! What is your name? Nice to meet you, A! Some people recall my country when they see this animal (a picture of brown bear). Do you know the English word for the animal? Anybody? Right! What is your name? Nice to meet you, B! And this is a brown bear! They say that brown bears walk along the streets in my country, that?s a myth, don?t believe it. And, finally, one of the most recognisable landmarks is the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square (show the picture). And I am from Russia! What do you think is the most famous thing in your country (ies)? ? Can be omitted. So, now I?d like to continue meeting each of you, let?s begin! What is your name? Nice to meet you! (trying to make some notes or to fill in class scheme with names). 2. Study 1 (up to 15 mins). When I came in I said ?hello? to you, but there are some other ways to greet each other in English. Write up on the board (or give out in print). Point out that some expressions are appropriate only if you have already met the person (if it is possible, use different markers or break down the expressions in group in some different way. ?Greetings? and ?Responses? How are you? Fine. And you? How?s life? Life is great. Nice to see you! How?s your day? Not bad. What about you? How?s everything? Alright. How are you? How are things? Everything is OK. What?s up? Not much. What?s new? Nothing. How is it going? It?s going well. Hey! Hey, man/bro/pal! Hi! Hi, what are you up to? Drill the expressions together with the students. Go and make the round saying ?Hello! I?m Natalya! What is your name? Nice to meet you, A. How are you? (trying to make some notes or to fill in class scheme with names). Give out worksheets with short dialogues for fill-the-gap activity. Example of the dialogue: - Hi, what are you up to? - Hello! Everything is fine. I?m rushing to my English lesson! - OK, have a good one! In other dialogues the last lines might be: See you later! Bye for now! For now! Take care! All right then! Peace! Good luck! etc. Check the answers, ask students to perform the dialogues in pairs, skipping the last, ?goodbye? line (the greeting and good-bye phrases should be highlighted in different colours). 3. Study 2. (up to 15 mins). a) When I came in I said ?hello? AND waved to you. When people meet each other, they often not only say something, they can use the gesture language too, probably doing something at the same time write up on the board the list and then show pictures and pronounce. Wave hands Shake hands Hug each other Bow Kiss Give high five Fist-bump So, now take the worksheets and let?s read the list of verbs all together, repeat after me and mime (show the gestures): wave hands! Shake hands! Hug! Bow! Kiss! Give high five! Fist-bump! OK, now match the pictures and the correct verbs in the worksheet, for example ? (show an example). Give up to five mins, then ask if the students are ready and check the answers asking in turns (revising the names by the way): B, picture one! -? - Well done!; F, picture two! - ? Does everybody agree with the answer? Etc. Ending the lesson. So, it?s time to say good bye now. Read the last lines from the dialogues out of your own list, ask the students to chant every time. Then say good bye to each of the students individually and ask to read the good-bye line from their own worksheet (pointing and helping to pronounce if necessary). NOTE: If it is obvious that students are strong, show them a video on greeting customs in different countries and discuss it; the last activity can be replaced with ?find out who? ?task: find out who your pair-mate hugs/gives high five/bows etc. (depending on the situation, several or only one example may be presented by each student), write up the questions they should ask each other up on the board: Who do usually hug /kiss/when you meet? List of possible answers you can make together with the students: mum/ sister/brother/ grandfather/ friend etc. Demonstrate the activity with one of the students. And report back to the class: N kisses her mother when they meet.
