The receptive skills in any language are reading and listening. There are specialized skills needed to be able to listen and read successfully including ability to read and listen to specific information (scanning), ability to read and listen for general ideas (skimming), ability to read and listen to detailed information and ability to deduce from context. Problems connected to the receptive skills includes language text difficulties, topics and tasks. Language difficulties are usually associated with unfamiliar words, words length or sentence length. This can be approached by preteaching vocabularies and careful selection of texts. Topic and task difficulties can be controlled by teaching a variety of topics to cater for the interest of the students and making tasks easier to understand and relate with.
