Unit eleven introduces the concepts of receptive and productive skills, and then focuses on the former (reading and listening) throughout the unit. Receptive skills are generalized into two forms based on intent, for purpose and for pleasure. When teaching receptive skills to a student, the teacher should aim to incorporate interesting topics for the students, including a variety of texts and listening activities that stimulate multiple receptive skill areas. This should include mostly non-authentic materials, but some authentic at times to also expose the students to realistic reading and listening scenarios. Among the materials, it should be noted that student's may employ a variety of reading and listening modes such as scanning or skimming, and that materials should be appropriate for the lesson's goal.
