We have different purposes as to why we read and listen to things. Students of language learning will always read and listen in class with a purpose because they are recieving guidance on how to improve their language skills in the L2. For entertainment, they may go back to reading and listening to things in their L1 for leisure. I believe that if a student picks up a book or listens to a talk which is in the L2 and that's not associated with the ciriculum they're in, that this is considered purposeful learning because they are trying to pick up on new language skills from those mediums. In the class setting, it is important to introduce harder concepts or vocabulary by pre-teaching it. This way the students will better understand and pick up on the points the teacher is trying to teach throughout the lesson.
