From my experience the most difficult of these grammar points for my students is definitely phrasal verbs. There are so many of them and a small change in them can lead to a completely different interpretation. Just yesterday I was talking with a friend about the differences in usage between ?break up? and ?break down.? Despite looking as if they both would involve the idea of direction, neither one does and both have completely different meanings. I think one of the most confusing for learners is ?go off.? For example, ?The alarm went off.? Learners often want to interpret this as meaning that the alarm turn off, but it actually means the alarm turned on even though the word ?off? is used. This is something that is always difficult to teach to my students.
