This unit focuses on how to choose materials to use in class and I believe it has a lot of good advice. Many textbooks that I've seen and used have graphics, data, or even vocabulary that is outdated and no longer useful, but in general, the structure of the lessons is useful-- at least for planning some of your own activities. I also agree with the assertion of the section that a teacher should not completely rely on a textbook for their whole lesson-- it seems unprofessional and like the teacher did not take much time to personalize the lesson, and I believe that students pick up on that unpreparedness and see it as an excuse or a reason to not work as hard or to not engage. All in all, textbooks, authentic texts, and created texts all have their use in the classroom so long as the teacher knows how to properly use them to the benefit of the students.
