Intonation is the variation of volume and pitch in a whole sentence, whereas stress is the variation in individual words. Intonation carries the message in a sentence and is the expression of emotions whilst speaking. The normal pattern of intonation in a statement is the rise/fall intonation. Fall/rise intonation indicates surprise and disagreement but is most often used when you want somebody to answer you. The third level of intonation is flat when the speaker doesn't have much to say and doesn't want to communicate. There are various methods to teach intonation: using nonsense words, by gesture, humming/singing, using the black/white board.
