This was by far the most challenging unit yet because I had no previous knowledge on phonetics. Intonation I had a decent understanding of previously, but I spent several hours on the phonetics section. The information will need to be reviewed further later. I was amazed, though, that I have been speaking English my whole life an never noticed HOW I spoke sounds and made words, and that these sounds can be broken down into such an organized system. Understanding this now helps me to have a better understanding of pronunciation difficulties my students may have. When I took a Czech course, I definitely noticed that there were sounds that my mouth either didn't know how to make or was very bad at making because I had never done so before. But by hearing how my students mispronounce words, I will be able to pinpoint what the issues are and know how to correct them.
