english As A Global LanguageEnglish is an official language of over fifty countries, and is the widely accepted yet unofficial language of a handful of countries including the united states. It is the accepted language of science, business and technology, and is one of six official languages of the United Nations and European Union. english is spoken as a first language by approximately 375 million people in the world, and is a second language to an estimated half a billion to over a billion people. It is the language with the largest vocabulary of over 250,000 distinct words, and is also the most widely published language. Because of these reasons, english is strongly believed by many to be the global language. The history of english can be broken down into three distinct periods: Old or Anglo-Saxon english, Middle english, and Modern english. english is West Germanic language that has been heavily influenced by Latin, Norse and Celtic. In the fifth century A.D., Germanic settlers from various parts of what is now northwest Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands brought english to Britain. With British colonialism came the spread of the english language across the world. Today, there are many varieties of english, with American english and British english being the most universally recognized. english has become the accepted language of science, business and technology around the globe due to its worldwide popularity and the efficiency of being able to communicate in a common language. As a result, approximately 80 to 90 percent of all scientific papers in scientific journals are written and published in english. While english is advantageous for science, business and technology, it may prove to have more disadvantages for literature. Writing and publishing literature in english enables the work to reach a broader audience and can prove to be very economical. However, different languages of the world possess their own special characteristics and vocabulary that may be better suited than english to convey meaning and emotion in literature. There is also the risk of world languages dying out in favor of english, and with them, culture and ideas could die as well. People who speak and use only english could potentially miss out on learning and understanding the world around them. Another disadvantage of adopting english as the global language is that it is the third most widely spoken language behind Mandarin and spanish and may not ever be able to surpass these languages. english has the disadvantages in that it is considered the most difficult language to learn. There is also the possibility of losing culture, diversity and world literature. However, english, with its complexity and large vocabulary to express ideas in varying ways and in specific detail, has proven to be advantageous in science, business and technology, which can be just as complex. It is efficient and economical in these fields, as well as in publishing literature. There is the advantage of reaching a wider audience and global sharing of ideas, and thus leading to an overall more educated population.
