Why complete a tefl course References: http://www.onlinetefl.com/about-itoi-tefl/why-tefl.html http://www.i-to-i.com/about-tefl-course.html Laura Harrison, Education Guardian, Friday 29 September 2006. Matt Smith, Education.guardian.co.uk Jenny Johnson, The Independent, Wednesday, 19 August 2009. I took on the TEFL course in a search of a challenge, new experience and rewarding work. In this article I looked at different reasons why complete this course. The demand for english teachers around the world continues to rise. english has emerged as a global language. This has created great career opportunities for english speakers to spread the word abroad while having an amazing experience at the same time. This is an opportunity for an individual to make a positive impact on peoples lives. Working abroad is both, a challenging and fun way to develop personally and professionally, as well as it is a more enriched and detailed travel experience. In practice, the TEFL course gives you the confidence to stand up in front of a class of students, to feel more secure in your knowledge. It teaches you how to plan lessons that include all the necessary elements of learning and help you to make your teaching meaningful and fun as well as establish a friendly and patient rapport with students. It takes you step-by-step through potential problems specific to an EFL class and then gives you advice on how to deal with those issues. Upon completion of the course an extremely useful assistance in job search, application and interviews is available. A TEFL qualification allows you to: Discover the beautiful corners of the world and be a part of them whilst learning a new skill. Get a certificate that is recognised at thousands of schools worldwide. It is also a great way to fund your travels. You will earn as you go, so you will not have to worry about running out of money or living on a shoestring. Get access to overseas job contacts. Give something back to a welcoming community. Make life-long friends abroad. TEFL training is attractive in its convenience as it can be tailored to fit your own personal circumstances. There are options of a face to face course in a classroom or an online course in the comfort of your own home. There is also an option to complete the TEFL or some part of it in an international location. Although the intensity of the course may put certain people off, training in a foreign environment gives plenty of advantages to skipping the UK. One of them is the opportunity to gain gentle but direct experience of the cultural differences. It may also be easier to secure work if your potential employer can see you as a human being rather than two A4 sheets of paper. Another point to remember is that if you are planning to stay in that country where you train, doing a course there will give you practical experience of teaching monolingual groups very similar to those you will teach after qualifying. In conclusion, it appears that TEFL courses succeed because they are teaching-driven, rather than being academically driven. After all, if an individual is thinking seriously about teaching, then they should take a serious teaching course, one which will provide the essential skills for them to embark on a successful teaching career in future.
