Peculiarities of the english language english is a very interesting yet complex language. When first learning english, non-native speakers have a variety of struggles to overcome, from pronunciation to grammar to vocabulary, each student has their struggles. One factor of english language that poses a great amount of distress and difficulty are the peculiarities and irregularities throughout. There are many words that are spelt the same way but pronounced differently and with completely different meanings all dependant upon the context of the sentence. By learning english as our first and native language, we are lucky to not have these issues and instead somehow understand the peculiarities correctly the first time reading through them. First, there are words that have multiple meanings and pronunciation. For example, take the sentence ?The farm was used to produce produce?. The word produce here has two different meanings (and pronunciations). At first glance, a non-native english speaker would maybe think that the word produce was duplicated, when rather the first means to produce something whereas the second is in reference to that which is produced, such as vegetables, fruit, etc. Another example sentence: The wind was too strong to wind the sail. In this case the two words that look the same are wind and wind, the first being the wind that moves the leaves on the trees whereas the second is the action of winding or twirling string around an apparatus. Both of these examples show how the english language can be very difficult to learn. Second, there are grammatical rules that don?t apply to all words singular and plural. Some rules suggest one thing whereas if you?d try to use them on another term, would make a completely different and incorrect plural of that initial word. Some examples are: the singular goose becomes geese in the plural where as the singular moose stays as moose in the plural, not meese. Another example is tooth and teeth, and subsequently booth to booths, not beeth. The examples go on and on and can become frustrating to students when trying to learn english. Lastly, there are certain words that look like they should be pronounced similarly but are not as well as certain words that look like they should be pronounced a certain way and again, are not. This, as with many topics in the english language, can very easily be a point of difficulty for students. Some examples are: though and enough, the only difference being the first two letters of these words, the words barely resemble each other when pronounced. Another example of two words are cell and sell, both pronounced exactly the same but spelt differently and will a double consonant at the end. Finally, words with silent letters such as debt are undoubtedly troublesome when first learning the language and trying to make some kind of pattern out of it all. In conclusion, english has its qualities that are very easy to learn and pick up, but it also has its peculiarities, which lends to the difficulties that many students have when first learning it. It is therefore important, as a teacher to come up with different ways in which to teach these irregularities in a way that is easiest to retain for the students. Without a good motivator by way of the teacher and/or motivation on part of the teacher, many of these details may be missed by the students which could make becoming fluent in the language nearly impossible.
