english as a Global Language The way I see it english is already a global language the reason for this is that the world is getting smaller all the time due to new development and technology. Now a day a person in 1 country can just send emails to people in other countries and the language mostly used in these cases is english. The movement of english around the world began with the old pioneers that traveled to the Americas and Asia, continued with the 19th century colonial development in Africa and the South Pacific, and took a further step when it was adopted in the 20th century as an official or semi-official language by many newly independent states. Now english is the official language in over 60 countries, and is represented in every continent. english is the first language in the UK, the usa, Australia and New Zealand. As a second language it is spoken in India, Singapore and other countries. english is also used as a foreign language in Russia, China and many other countries throughout the world. It is this spread of the language, which makes the term ?Global language? a reality. People realize that they need a global tongue, and there are many reasons for that. The first and foremost reason for learning english is communication. If you know english, you can speak with a large number of people the world over. A lot of people also think having a global language is a bad thing in the way that they feel that they might lose their heritage. english is also the language of computers, science, sport, business and politics. When our leaders of the world meet during conferences the most spoken language is english not chinese and not Hindi even though those languages are more spoken then english. At the moment over 500million people speak english but over 1 billion people speak Mandarin. I learn english and other languages, because it?s interesting for me to learn about customs, traditions, culture and the life of different people. Also I understand that I can use it. I want to read foreign books / magazines and watch television in the original I have been to countries where they dub the movies and I find that this is only hindering people from learning english. Also I like to travel and It is difficult to visit countries, when you don't know the language of these countries. But most of the time people can understand you if you speak english. Learning english is not an easy thing for most people I was lucky that my parents took me on many travels also in Holland the TV shows that are made in english are shown in english. It is a long process and takes a lot of time and patience. But to know english today is necessary for every educated person. english is a great use in my current profession and I hope teaching english will help people in their future profession. In my opinion nowadays english is an essential part of daily life of every person all over the world.
