Motivating StudentsMotivating students should not feel like a task, but more like a benefit of the job. To make a student feel excited about something new is a wonderful thing. A teacher has the ability to change a student?s life by introducing them to a whole new world of information they had not known before. With the right tools and good encouragement students can and will be successful. Teachers can help students out by establishing rapport, keeping a positive atmosphere, and making the importance of learning english clear. Motivating students is necessary for a successful classroom. For many students it can become extremely difficult for a student to complete homework assignments, be actively participating in class, and continue with learning english with a lack of motivation. Students want to be motivated and engaged in their learning, it makes them feel confident when they can figure out and understand something new. Some great ways to motivate students are to get to know them, create a positive atmosphere, and help them understand why the material is important. Even if class is full of activities, students will never be fully engaged in the material without understanding why it is important to them. This should be a fairly easy task for english teachers because there are so many ways in which learning english is important. The student can travel later in life, future career prospects, improve grades, study or live in an english speaking country, or out of interest in languages. Knowing more than one language will open up many new doors and opportunities around the world. Getting to know your students is very important because it allows you to gear material to their interests. Students will be more enthusiastic when the material is something they enjoy. The material doesn?t have to be something they originally had an interest in, a teacher can create interest. This can be done by discussing the topic, showing pictures, predicting what the text will be about and other activities. These activities are mainly done in the beginning of class, this helps get the students through the study parts of class that won?t be as fun. Getting the students talking is necessary to a language class, but it is not easy. The best way to get students speaking is to make them feel comfortable. There are many ways to do this, some are as simple as changing the dynamics of the room, an example would be changing the desks into a horse shoe instead of the traditional rows. Some other ways are more difficult; establishing rapport with the students is not easy, but will be extremely helpful in getting the students to open up. Establishing rapport can be done by making the students feel like valued members of the class, using the students? names, eye contact, and giving one-on-one time. Also, giving students constant positive feedback will allow them to know what they need to work on and help to boost their self-esteem. If students still don?t feel comfortable speaking in front of the class the teacher must give them enough group work to slowly get them out of their comfort zone.
