Classroom ManagementThe topic, I have chosen, is Classroom Management because I believe the success of your classroom is how you manage and present the classroom to your students. The term of Classroom Management is used to describe the process of ensuring that the classroom runs smoothly despite disruptive behavior by the students. When the school year begins or a new class starts, there is always excitement and anticipation of meeting the teacher for the very first time. First impressions are extremely important but that should not hinder, the teacher, from being firm and having guidelines for the class to follow. One of the ways that this could be done would be by establishing rules at the beginning of the school year. What is important in helping the students learn -- will they be able to eat in class, sit by a friend, listen to music, speak out of turn or raise their hand to answer a question? These are some of the things that the teacher needs to establish on first meeting their students. Another way that the teacher could manage their classroom would be by arranging the classroom seating area. This could be done in different ways depending on the character and personality of the teacher. Firstly, the classroom could be set up in an orderly fashion so that the students will be able to see the teacher, the board and any other learning devices that would be used during class time. Secondly, the class could be set up in a horseshoe shape circle (depending on the class size), or long tables to allow students to sit in groups. The teacher may choose all of these ideas depending on what they are teaching and the activities they would use in learning. There could be other suggestions on how to set up a classroom but it rests on the teacher on how they would want to set it up. Another technique, in classroom management, is being organized and well prepared in presenting the lessons to the students. Having the class follow a lesson plan with times is a good way to keep things flowing and moving so that there are no time lapses. The class doesn?t need to know that they are doing this but the teacher could write down their objectives and strategies for learning with projected time allotments so that the class stays on task. This is also a helpful aid when having a substitute teacher come to fill-in if there?s an absence from the class. In having a structured lesson plan it helps students to not deviate from the task at hand and helps keep them focussed on what needs to be learned. Discipline is a broad topic in the classroom management section and there are many views on how this should be done. As previously noted, rules should be introduced to the class during the first meeting. When dealing with confrontation, the teacher should talk to the student individually, rather than singling the student out in front of the class. The teacher should start with a positive statement and then suggest a way that they could change their behavior to help do that. Another thing that would be beneficial is to document the accident in case there is need to have a paper trail in dealing with the issue. And to remember, that you were once a student. Think before you act. Take a deep breath, if necessary before saying or doing anything you might later regret. I believe the success of your classroom is how you manage it and present the classroom to your students. During the initial days of meeting the class, rules should be addressed to the students, the class should be set up in how the teacher would like to teach, he or she should be organized and well prepared in presenting the lessons to the students and deal with discipline in a respectful and manageable way. I believe that classroom management is linked closely to issues of motivation, discipline and respect. If the classroom has most of these dynamics then classroom management should be a success. I have learned many things and look forward to using these Classroom Management ideas in my future class.
