Problems facing students of different nationalitiesMany people are studying english now, and many of them go to english-spoken countries. That is to say, people from various countries are studying together there. In fact, when I was studying english in Canada, I met many students from all over the world. I had a good time with them, but at the same time, I had some trouble with them as well. Same as many Asian students, I could write and read english and knew grammar well, but I couldn't speak fluently. At the first test for dividing classes, I got a good score and joined a high class. Some European and mexican students blamed about it. They could speak english much better than me, but they had to join the lower class. I thought it's so difficult to divide students just by the writing tests. Teachers need to think some ways to divide them. Also teachers in multinational class or who go to another country and teach english have to be careful to pick up topics. Religion and politics are very sensitive. Even from same country, depend on the regions, they have different religion / denomination or race. We can enjoy the various culture, but at the same time, we have to learn their own culture and respect them each other. Students from over the world will face different problems when they start studying english. In Asia and Arab and some other countries, they don't use alphabet, so it's hard for them to get used to it. In the other hand, European and South American use it in their mother languages, so it's easy for them to get it. But, of course, spelling is different, so they fail at easy spelling mistakes. Pronunciation problems they have are so different each other. In Costa rica, they don't have the / th sounds, so they say just t / d / f / sounds instead of that. Another difficulty is the difference between b and v. In japan and Korea, they have a difficulty for sound b and v, too. And the most typical problem is l / r sound for them. It's so hard to find out the difference of them and speak them as well. In Korea p / f sound is difficult for them, too. Pronunciation problems is not just the particular sounds. For italian, intonation patterns, stress and rhythm are different from their languages, so they feel difficulty with that. Grammar is a tough topic for all english learners. In japanese, they don't have a Articles in their language, so it's hard for them to use it in proper way. Also, japanese use verb at the end of the sentence, but in english, they say the verb (conclusion) just after the subject. These rules how to make sentence are difficult for japanese Korea and some other countries too. Motivation are different as well. In Costa rica children are not used to get strong discipline, so it's hard to get attention so long without fun activities. Also people in Costa rica are not so serious about studying, so teachers have to push them a lot. On the other hand, Asian are so serious about studying. Even children try to study hard to go into the good schools or to get good jobs. But many of them are shy and hesitate to say their opinion in the class, so they take so long to get fluent speaking. Studying environment are various, too. This might be connected with their motivation. Many developed countries have high quality education system, and good schools. In these countries, students have many opportunity to study english, but in some developed countries or poor countries, they don't have enough environment to study english, even people want to. As you can see, students have so many various problems, but if teachers know well about their different problems and support them, learners can make progress. english is just a tool for communication, but if many people can use it, we can understand each other more and might make this world better.
