TEFL for non native english speaking teachers Over the past twenty years english has emerged as the pole to pole, universally and ubiquitously spoken language. It has become a reality : almost every person on earth is exposed to english language daily and may speak it at least once in a life ; wherever you live in the world, whoever you are, whatever your job may be, this is true. Therefore, in this world wide open over which english language reigns - and that's not going to change back -, the need for english teachers has hugely increased in all countries? It's hardly surprising then that so many persons try seize the opportunity. In South America, South-East Asia, China, japan, Europe, ESL teachers are required and sometimes eagerly awaited because governments all know perfectly well the average employee in the close future imperatively will speak english. Money and job markets issues are not the only reason why a non native speaker of english would want to teach it though. The other common main purpose might come from the real pleasure of learning and speaking english, that one can share and renew by teaching it. That being said, it's legitimate to ask : Can a non native english speaking ESL teacher be as competent as a native one ? Although an exhaustive and conclusive answer based on long term investigations with statistics and charts would be preferable, we'll try to highlight the main parts of it in this short article. First and foremost, we should remember that ESL classes are not PhD-level classes. The students' objective, consequently their teacher's goal, is to manage basic, advanced or specific english language skills depending on whether they just begin studying it or prepare an exam such as TOEFL or must speak english at office, etc. The knowledge ESL students aim for being, relatively speaking, easy to acquire, theoretically anyone that works seriously may reach the required level and then be able to teach. Non native english speakers, of course, are likely to work harder than native ones, and maybe they won't ever speak a naturally rich and sophisticate english with a punctilious and elegant British accent, but very few could boast about it anyway and most of those who can don't want to teach and share it. Non native english speakers must constantly improve their language skills by reading books, pay much more attention when listening native english speaking, studying everlastingly, etc., but that's how you keep your mind sharp, fresh and creative, which is essential in teaching positions. Moreover, the difficulties encountered in learning english are more or less the same for everyone, but what may seem innate, naturally comprehensible to native english speakers more than often sounds really odd to others ; in this case, non native english speaking teachers, who've faced the same problems, felt the same perplexity and found the easiest solution for their own self-interest, would spontaneously show a sympathetic, patient and pedagogical attitude, which is always of a great help for students. Non native english speaking teachers are at a disadvantage compared to native ones, with regard to their accent on which they must work hard and patiently and on the language slightest nuances, subtleties and rare words, but this argument just can't compete with the fact that an ESL teacher, besides the transmission of the course content, is first and foremost a person who teaches, i.e. that helps students learn and show them how to learn, for which job it doesn't matter you're native or non native english speaker. Non native english speaking teachers are nothing to be afraid of, since what they found difficult in learning the language they can transform into personal method improvement. The key to be a good ESL teacher doesn't lie in your mother tongue but in your honest dedication to students' interest and the happiness this job brings you.
