TEFL for non-native english speaking teacher The demand of EFL teachers is increasing exponentially, beside that there is a requirement which is in bold letter saying that ''native-speakers only''. It seems like hundred years back when England was ruling India and ''Dogs and Indians are not allowed'' was written in front of every high society clubs or any official building. It may sounds like discrimination but it is true the employer are looking at the nationality not the qualifications. All over the world the EFL schools are opening positions for teaching but only native-speakers are allowed to apply and get job, even though some of them don't have vast knowledge of their own language. Actually the system has adapted the business theory,it will be easier to get students if they can show the parents and students that blue-eyed, blonde caucasians teachers walking in front them which seems like a fashion show where the parents and students are judge and teachers are the models of difference EFL schools. Mostly in China specify in their job advertisement that native speakers only, moreover hay want from those certain countries like UK, usa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand even South Africa. This is just a process of provoking the students of non-native to think that they are to learn a language that then can never be good enough to compete with the native speakers no matter how much deep they know about it. This is not motivating for them unless a non-native english speaking teacher teach them who is a better example of motivation. A non-native english speaking teacher only can know what types of problem the students will encounter during the lesson and how to recover it because he/she faced the same problems. Beside this, students will be motivated to see that a non-native speaker can achieve success too. Even some employers reject qualified non-native TEFL certified teacher because of their accent which is totally injustice because if they want to bring the topic of accent before they teach the students they should think which accent they will teach them the British or the American or the australian or the Canadian; all these have their own accent which are far away from each other and some of them are very much wrong too according to the phonemic theory. If the administrator decides that they will teach the students australian accent by an australian which sometimes is not even understandable then how the students will learn the language properly; it will lead them towards disaster but nothing. If the employer decide to teach the students by a non-native EFL teacher then it will be very much effective and more easier for the students to learn the language. When learning the language it really doesn't matter to copy or learn the accent, it can be adopted any time, which are important the grammar, the expression of feelings, meaning etc. The question may rise that how can a non-native claims to teach english when it's not even his/her own language? The non-native EFL teacher will only know what are the main terms for the language and accent to teach because a non-native teacher is always a experienced learner where he/she learned the language throughout the procedures of learning and most likely they have studied english far more depth and detail than the native speakers. This will have started at an early age in school and often continued on through university. So the non-native teacher can empathize more closely with the students because they have been through the process of learning the language, and been trained to teach it. All these facts provoke some general questions, if the course is same, if the certificate is same, then why only native-speakers will get the EFL job, why the non-native speakers can't? Then why the TEFL course is open for everyone native and non-native? Why it allows non-native speakers to join the course also? Is it for business only? Today it is very much important to know all the answers. Even though after all the arguments the non-natives should not lose hope, they should deal with the system gently because it is already fragile and must understand that to look at things or facts from different angles and not judge the system for taking such decision. It may be harsh but true, life is a race, if you don't run someone will push you down and win. So have courage to fight it may be one day will see the light of success. There is a famous phrase, "Never chase success, chase excellence, success will chase you."
