Teach English in JianchAngdao Jiedao - Tianjin
BusinessEnglishThere is no doubt that english is now the language of business and in most international companies executives are expected not only to have a basic understanding of the language, but also be able to conduct their business in english. International corporations (often with their HQ in the US or UK) simply do not have the resources to translate all internal documents into local languages. Given the current trend of globalization, it almost seems archaic for executives (especially at a more senior level) not to be able to conduct their business in english. Many senior executives have reached their positions by hard work and skills which often do not include great linguistic ability. However their determination has put them in a position where the requirement to use the english language has now become indispensable. The business environment in most markets is very tough, and they will be facing enormous pressures to perform outside their own markets in a global economy. Even smaller companies now are being forced to look at international development as a means to expand their businesses. My own background is a career in advertising sales. After a degree in french/spanish/History of Art I had little training for the business world. However I had good interpersonal skills and was fortunate to find my way into selling, which perfectly suited my temperament for working with people. I worked my way up from an advertising sales executive position to running my own team in London, Singapore and New York. I was relocated several times and worked in different markets. It was a real discovery working with different people and in different cultures. However wherever I went I realized that english was indispensable to be able to communicate across the globe. I loved our international meetings in Hong Kong with teams from India, China, Taiwan and the Middle East ? all working in english! After graduation I had taught english for a year in several institutions in Montpellier (France) whilst deciding which career path to take. I enjoyed the work although I had no formal training in teaching english. One of my assignments was in a language school teaching executives from IBM. The executives had been instructed by their company that unless they learnt english, they would not be able to keep their jobs. They were therefore under enormous pressure to learn. Looking back on it, I feel it was rather irresponsible of the school to have given me the job of teaching a group with so little experience. I remember struggling to explain simple grammar rules. However it gave me a taste of teaching and I really enjoyed it. So having left advertising I decided to revisit my teaching experience. However often my friends assured me I could teach, I remembered my own experience as an english teacher. I knew that it is not possible to teach properly if you have not had a proper training. I did not feel confident to teach english because I had already tried it. Having more experience I realized that I needed to take the TEFL course to give me the confidence to teach a group of busy executives. Business english is my chosen path because I understand the environment my students/executives will be working in. I have myself led the life of a busy executive travelling to meetings and working in a stressful environment. I not only understand the level of english they will require, but also the business culture in which they will be expected to perform. Teaching a class of business executives will be challenging. They are often stressed people who may not be motivated to learn. They may well also be highly successfully in other areas and easily humiliated in front of their colleagues who may find learning english less challenging. They will often by tired by their work and external pressures (family, travel, other engagements) so I will need to keep the classes dynamic and interesting. My goal will be to target small and medium size companies and work as a teacher/consultant helping their executives to learn or improve their level of english. I will work with the companies to ensure they are happy with the services I offer. I will also work hard on lesson planning to ensure that each class is interesting and informative so that the students/executives actually look forward to taking their classes. I will avoid simply using conversation as a tool and structure my lessons around the Engage, Study, Activate methods I have learnt with TEFL. I?m excited to get started! I?m also really pleased I did the TEFL course. I would not have had the courage and confidence to embark on this new career without the help of the course.
