Classroom ManagementMany factors contribute to successful classroom management. Teachers who are successful do not only respond properly when problems occur, but prevent the problem before it arises. Before students enter the classroom, organisation plans are well in place. It is very important for a teacher to have a good physical presence in the classroom, in particular good eye contact and body language. Eye contact is especially important with younger children to prevent them from getting bored and drifting off, especially if they have been sitting for long periods of time, they need to see the expressions as well as hear what the teacher is saying. The teacher can also encourage contributions from the students to see if they are concentrating. Good body language is essential and should be used in the classroom to give messages to the children and adults, the teacher should move around the classroom and interact with the students and not sit behind a desk for the whole lesson. The teachers voice should have clarity, volume and variety in order for instructions to be understood. A dull boring voice will lead to students not paying attention and misbehaving. There are a number of factors why seating arrangement is important and this is measured by:- No. of students in the class Type of chairs and tables in the room Students personality Space Available The types of seating arrangements in the classroom are orderly rows, circles and horseshoes and separate tables The teacher can use different students groupings, these being whole class grouping which creates a sense of belonging amongst the group, students on their own, this gives the teacher the opportunity to respond to individual difference in pace of learning ability,Pair work, this increases opportunities for student time and student interaction,Group work, Students are encouraged to speak english. The teacher can make sure all students are equally involved in the lesson and give individual attention. He/she should know the names of all students in the classroom, not just the ones that he/she may know. It is important to keep all the students occupied even when attending to others especially the weaker students. The teacher should not pick on students who do not want to be included, ask them easy questions and praise their answers. Students confidence needs building and they don't want to feel intimidated. Students depend on their teacher for guidance and correct english, It is important for a teacher to talk during the following sctivities, presenting, checking, modelling or clarifying, giving instructions and setting up activities, providing language input, establishing rapport. The teacher should choose carefully the language for instructions and explanations for the activities or lessons. Keep things simple and easy. TEFL jargon should be avoided, and it is useful if the teacher can use gestures, mimes, maps, pictures etc. To check whether instructions to the student have been understood, the teacher should question them regarding the lesson, and ask them to explain to what he/she has been taught, this can be done using visual clues with demonstrations and examples. The teacher should also monitor all students to see if they are working and understanding their instructions. To ensure that the class is successful and enjoyable it is vital that there is good rapport between the student and teacher. Students are more likely to learn and contribute when the lessons are relaxed and have good communication with the teacher. The teacher should know the names of all the students in the class, and make sure that all the students know each other's names and a little basic information about each other. With regards to problem behaviour in the clasroom, there are several reasons why this can occur e.g. family problems, low self esteem, boredom, class size, lack of respect for the teacher/other students, and per pressure. The teacher should react immediately when the problem arises and not wait until it gets worse. This could simply involve stopping and and looking at the student. he/she must stay calm and not get angry or shout at the student. They must focus on the behaviour and not the student in order to solve the problem. The student that has the problem should be kept behind after class to discuss what the problem is?
