The Role of the TeacherThe teacher has many roles in the classroom, including manager, guide, supporter, encourager, corrector, and gate opener. As a manager, the teacher is the authority figure in the classroom. He or she is responsible for creating the curriculum and the daily schedule. As a manager, the teacher creates and regulates the rules. She leads the classroom discussions and activities. She is the leader and the final authority for the students if there is a debate about the topic at hand, or an argument between the students in the classroom. As a guide, the teacher guides the students on their path to learning the english language. She presents the materials to be learned by the students, and she helps them to obtain the knowledge. She does not simply give them the correct answers, but rather she ?guides? them and gives them the tools to get to where they want to go. The teacher is not just teaching them language, but she is teaching them how to think, which helps them later in their lives. A teacher?s role is to be a supporter. One of the things a teacher should try to do is to get to know his or her students. As a supporter, the teacher will be available to listen to the students if they want to talk. A teacher should show his or her students that they are available. Sometimes a student may have a problem they wish to share with the teacher. In this case, the teacher would use the role of ?Supporter.? The teacher would be a support to the student simply by listening, and letting the student know that the teacher is there. For major problems, a teacher could show support by perhaps finding resources to help the student if necessary. As an encourager, the teacher is helping the students to build self-confidence. A teacher should praise his or her students for getting the correct answers, and also should recognize a student?s effort and hard work. A teacher should spend time getting to know her students, and thus will come to recognize shy students, less confident students, etc., who may need a little extra encouragement, or a nice word. For younger students, stickers make a great way to say, ?Bravo! Well done!? Of course, oral praise is always effective as well! A teacher?s role also includes that of ?Corrector.? The teacher should be giving the students opportunities for self-correcting, and also asking other students to help come up with the right answers. But the teacher should also be able to correct frequent and major mistakes in a nice way, without embarrassing the student. This should be done in a nice way, but occasionally this does need to be done. The teacher also needs to ?Correct? misbehavior. Whether this is done without words, like a certain ?glance? towards the student, or with simply saying their name, such as, ?Isn?t that right, James??, the teacher should maintain a respectful classroom environment. At times, the teacher will need to maintain discipline in a stronger way, such as going over to the student to speak with them. If necessary (as a last resort), the student may need to leave the classroom, to visit a principal?s office, etc. The teacher also has the role of ?Gate Opener.? As a teacher, he or she is opening the gate to the world for her students! A student is learning how to speak english, and is also learning how to think, how to get along with others, and how to treat people in their lives with respect. The student can take all of these things ?out into the world? with them. Also, having a knowledge of english is also a great thing. The student will be able to go anywhere in the world and find someone who speaks the english language as well. The teacher is making all of this possible!
