Motivating studentsMotivating students can be easily done if you know how to do it and you have a passion for teaching. The younger students need motivating a lot more than the older students, this is mainly because older students have chosen to learn where as the younger learners haven?t. Younger learns also have less attention span therefore motivational methods need to be used to get them interested and excited to learn. The main method to motivate is to keep the lessons varied introducing new ways of learning, keeping the students from becoming bored and losing interest. For instance bringing in visual items from outside the classroom for the students to pass round, introducing new fun games, bringing in images or photos and letting them have fun with the language with free role plays. The teacher sets an example to the students so if the teacher is not excited about the lesson and topic neither will the students. The teacher should also let the students take control in some aspects of the lesson, such as choosing a topic they would like to learn about . This makes the students even more motivated as they are all really interested. The teacher also needs to create a positive learning environment for the students to work in making them feel positive. Building relationships with students and taking the time to get to know them earns students respect meaning they are more motivated to listen and learn. Building relationships between students themselves getting them to take part in group activities can motivate them to work harder together. Teaming groups with a mixture of weak students and stronger students can also get tem motivated, the stronger students can help the weaker giving them a feeling of accomplishment and likewise for the weaker student as they are learning. When correcting students it needs to be done in a motivational way, Constructive criticism always shows students that they are progressing rather than being wrong. The teacher needs to make sure they mark students work as soon as possible so the students see that the teacher takes it seriously too, otherwise they will think there is no point handing in work on time. When teachers mark work they also need to make sure it is clear and positive to inspire students to carry on as well as making sure they don?t make the same mistakes. Praise should be carried out constantly so the students are motivated to carry on and know that their work it being noticed, another way to appreciate their work is to create an awards scheme. An example of this would be a gold star scheme, rewarding students with gold stars for their good work and eventually aiming for an end prize. This motivates student?s even more especially younger students as they may not be too excited or motivated about learning the language they can direct their focus to gaining gold stars. Carrying out small tests either at the end of each class or week can motivate students to be alert during class as they know there is a test, the teach should make this clear so it isn?t thrown upon them and they lose all confidence. The teacher should also describe to students what to expect from lessons and how much work they will be doing so they do not get disheartened and fed up when they find out. Overall students need motivation as it is easy to lose track of what they are aiming for. All these methods remind students and keep them focused and entertained, it makes things easy for the teacher as students will constantly be listening and wanting to know what is happening next.
