english as a Global LanguageEnglish is and has been a Global Language since 449 AD, since the British Empire started to expand around the world. The reasons for english becoming a global language are various: it is the official language in 47 countries and it is the language used for science, technology, medicine, computers and tourism. Speaking english has become a personal and professional achievement for most of the people. As it opens doors to many areas, such as jobs, travels, social areas and so on. The modern days we are living have a tendency of globalization. This includes a common language around the world. But of course this has pros and cons. The good points of having a common language are several. Starting with the fact that there over 200 countries in the world, if we could all use a common language, there would be no more communication barriers, the countries will be more accessible, travelling will be easier, people will have no problems in socializing with the local people, in finding friends all over the world. As a business, if communication becomes easy, the business improves. Therefore an economical growth can be observed. It is the language that millions of children learn at school and also the main media language. Generally speaking the people tend to learn english for career purposes, to achieve better jobs and this became and essential request for any job position. As a negative side of english becoming a global language we could refer to some aspects. If one language (does not matter which one) becomes a global language, the native speakers will have an unfair advantage in any situation above the non native speakers. The society could be divided between native speakers of the global language and non native speakers. This could be manipulated to the advantage of the native speakers. Also if there will be one global langue, the langue will become poor and will lose the origins. It will develop in such ways that will become a simplified language. Also many people have expressed their unwillingness for having a global language, as they feel that in this way they will lose the cultural heritage and personal touch of their own country. Discussing whether english should be or not the global language, we have to mention that in the latest years Mandarin has become as well a desired language to learn, due to the economical growth and high population of China. In the same way the number of spanish speaking countries is very high, but in the same time the economical power of these countries is very low. There is a debate about the future, and which of the languages will be more spoken, english or Mandarin. However I do believe that the people of China will be more dragged in learning english, as the media has strong influence in Asia. As a conclusion both english and Mandarin are important to attain professional success, and gain competitive advantages within the globalized world. I highly believe that a language which spoken in parallel with the native language, can not harm nor lose any part of the personal culture and traditions. Speaking a foreign language can only help with the personal growth and professional achievements, it can improve social life and professional life.
